Steep Site Sanctuary
Koolewong
Converting a steep, unruly site to a sunny, family playground
The Brief
This newly acquired family home required substantial renovations to the house and gardens.
The house is sitting close to the street at the top of the block, leaving a steep, rear yard requiring a new landscape
The property provides a beautiful, expansive water view to the North and North-East, whilst sitting above the local train station for the necessary commute to Sydney by one of the parents.
They wanted this to be their family home for many years to come.
They are very active as a family. like entertaining friends and family and enjoy outdoor life.
The Solution
We showed them the possibilities of the site and together we grew the brief to include:
A swimming pool with water surface 8 metres x 4.5metres, sized to allow possible private swimming lessons in future. The pool to have a retractable pool cover and room to move freely around the perimeter, with a relaxed seating area for parents and friends.
A firepit providing outdoor night-time entertainment for children and parents
Some level area for the kids to run, but minimal turf to reduce lawn mowing duties
A garden to encourage children and family to explore and provide a leafy outlook from the house deck above.
Lighting at night to negotiate steps and level changes
Natural finishes and less-structured forms in the hardscape elements
The trees have grown to provide a leafy canopy viewed from the house and deck above. The pool glints invitingly from below the house and provides a beautiful destination through the garden. The firepit is used all year round and the winding steps and sandstone boulders encourage their children to run through the garden at all levels.
